Ashen Throne Beginner Guide: Your First 24 Hours in the Wasteland
Your first day in Ashen Throne has one job: turn a damaged Crawler and a starter commander into one complete squad that can handle its opening objectives, run an extraction, and make an informed decision about leaving the Frontier.
Do not spread your resources across every facility or rush into the Wastes because a richer site appears nearby. Finish the Awakening, follow the Urgent objective chain in order, and build toward a 500-Power squad. Start extraction in the Frontier, where your Crawler is protected, but remember that troops occupying a site can still be attacked by other players.
If you have not entered the open beta yet, start with How to Play Ashen Throne.
The short first-day checklist
By the end of your opening route, aim to have:
- completed the Awakening and reached the Frontier;
- upgraded the Barracks and Workshop to Level 2;
- crafted a Signal Conduit and two skill cards;
- equipped your starter commander with a weapon and two cards;
- raised commander Leadership to 500;
- trained 320 troops and assembled a 500-Power squad;
- deployed to a Frontier extraction site;
- checked the Events board;
- used the free daily Signal Beacon summon;
- claimed the Daily Free Drop and opened its delivery crate;
- joined or created an alliance.
Those are not arbitrary beginner tips. They follow Ashen Throne's current post-tutorial objective chain, which is designed to fund each next step.
Step 1: Finish the Awakening before optimizing
Ashen Throne opens by teaching the whole loop in miniature. You restore the Generator, drive the Crawler out of the buried tutorial sector, reach a Signal Beacon, recruit a commander, train troops, run an extraction, craft a skill card, and survive the Stand before entering the Frontier.
Complete that sequence before worrying about an ideal build. The tutorial gives you the systems and starter resources that the first-day route expects you to have. Leaving half-understood menus behind is more expensive than spending another few minutes learning what they do.
Once Ada welcomes you to the Frontier, the wider strategy game begins. The Frontier is the only safe zone for your Crawler. There is no shield to toggle. Position is what makes your base safe.
Step 2: Treat the Urgent objectives as your build order
Open the Objectives panel and follow the Urgent chain from the top. Its 24-hour presentation is a priority signal, not a failure timer. The server keeps the route available rather than deleting your progress when a clock reaches zero.
More importantly, claiming each objective provides resources for later steps. If you jump ahead and spend those materials elsewhere, you can make the intended route slower for no strategic benefit.
Your first construction sequence is simple:
- Upgrade the Barracks to Level 2.
- Upgrade the Workshop to Level 2.
- Craft a Signal Conduit.
- Craft two skill cards.
The Barracks comes first because other facility upgrades depend on it. Workshop Level 2 opens the crafting work needed for the rest of the route.
Step 3: Build one commander before building everything
A common strategy-game instinct is to distribute upgrades evenly. Resist it on day one. Ashen Throne rewards a complete squad more than a collection of unfinished systems.
Equip the weapon already waiting in your inventory, then equip the two skill cards you crafted. Install Signal Conduits until your starter commander reaches 500 Leadership. Leadership determines how much of your army that commander can bring, so this step connects equipment, cards, and troop capacity into one usable formation.
The current opening route then funds a 320-troop training batch. Queue those troops at the Barracks, use the supplied catalyst flow to reduce the timer, and assign the finished troops to your squad.
Your readiness checkpoint is 500 squad Power. Power is not a promise that you win every battle, but reaching that mark prevents you from walking into the extraction loop with a half-filled formation.
Composition still matters. Ashen Throne uses a Kinetic, Electric, and Psionic counter triangle, so raw headcount is only part of the answer. Read the combat overview before choosing harder sites by yield alone.
Step 4: Run a Frontier extraction first
The Urgent chain points you to a nearby Tier 1 extraction site. Use it.
Frontier extraction lets you learn the loop while keeping your Crawler protected. Your troops at the site are not protected by that safety rule: other players can contest occupied sites even in the Frontier. Watch the NPC waves and any incoming attacks, and recall when the risk exceeds what your squad can handle.
When the squad brings its haul home to your Crawler in the Frontier, that haul banks automatically. Open the banked delivery crate to receive its contents. This is different from Wastes cargo, which stays unbanked until your Crawler returns to the Frontier.
Choose the site for the resource you need:
| Site | Primary resource | Typical defending class | Efficient counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generator Ruin | Fuel | Electric | Psionic |
| Fabrication Yard | Scrap | Kinetic | Electric |
| Hydroponic Vault | Rations | Psionic | Kinetic |
| Data Archive | Satoshis | Mixed | Inspect before committing |
| Signal Node | Fuel, with Signal Shard drops | Psionic | Kinetic |
These are NPC wave tendencies, not a guarantee about every unit or a player occupying the site. The useful habit is checking what the site produces, what is guarding it, and whether your current formation is the right tool. For example, if you need Fuel and your available troops are Psionic, inspect a Generator Ruin before defaulting to the nearest Signal Node: both offer Fuel, but their usual NPC classes favor different counters.
Step 5: Use the free systems before spending
While the extraction runs, complete three low-friction objectives:
- Open the Events page and see what is currently active.
- Visit a city Signal Beacon and use the free daily summon.
- Claim the Daily Free Drop in the Shop, then open its delivery crate.
Event schedules are live, so do not build your day around an event name you saw in an old guide. The in-game Events board is the source for the current window and countdown.
The free Beacon summon begins widening your commander options. The free delivery also teaches the difference between receiving a crate and opening it into usable goods. Use both before deciding whether any other offer matters to your plan.
Step 6: Join an alliance before treating the Wastes as routine
The final opening objective is to join or create an alliance. That placement is deliberate. Ashen Throne's larger objectives are coordinated: alliances reinforce, share information, organize rallies, and compete for Citadel districts.
Joining an alliance does not make the Wastes safe. It gives you people who can help interpret the map, coordinate timing, and respond when a run goes wrong.
Look for an alliance whose activity window matches yours and whose expectations are clear. A smaller active group is more useful than a large roster that never answers.
When are you ready to enter the Wastes?
The Frontier and the Wastes use different rules. Your Crawler is safe in the Frontier. Once its live position crosses into the Wastes or Deep Wastes, PvP is enabled. Wastes extraction haul remains unbanked until your Crawler returns to the Frontier, so winning the site is only half the run. You still need to bring the cargo home.
Before crossing the boundary, confirm that:
- your active commander has a weapon and equipped skill cards;
- your squad is filled to the Leadership limit you planned around;
- its class composition makes sense for the target site;
- you know the route back to the Frontier;
- the expected haul is worth the travel and exposure;
- you are prepared to recall instead of protecting a bad decision.
The best first-day Wastes run is not the deepest one. It is the one that teaches you how to leave, gather, read the risk, and return with the haul banked.
Read how the Wastes change the rules before your first crossing.
First-day mistakes to avoid
Upgrading every building at once
Follow the Barracks and Workshop route first. The opening rewards are sequenced around it.
Training troops before raising Leadership
Troops sitting outside a usable squad do not help your first extraction. Build commander capacity and the formation together.
Choosing extraction sites only by distance
Resource type and defender composition matter. A slightly farther site that your squad counters can be the better decision.
Assuming the Frontier teaches Wastes banking risk
Haul returned to a Crawler in the Frontier banks automatically, but troops holding a Frontier site can still face PvP. Wastes cargo stays unbanked until the Crawler returns to the Frontier. Treat both site defense and the return route as part of the plan.
Looking for a shield button
The old toggleable shield system is retired. Keep your Crawler in the Frontier when you need safety.
Waiting too long to find an alliance
Alliance play is not only an endgame feature. It improves information and coordination as soon as you enter the shared world.
Ashen Throne first-day FAQ
Do I have to finish everything within 24 hours?
No. The opening route is presented as an Urgent chain, but it does not erase your progress or create a failure state when the first window ends. Use the sequence as a priority guide.
Should I enter the Wastes on my first day?
Only after you understand Frontier extraction and have a complete squad. Crossing early is optional. A controlled first run is more useful than rushing toward the highest-tier site you can see.
Is my Crawler safe while I am offline?
Your Crawler is protected from PvP while it is in the Frontier. Troops you leave at an extraction site can still be attacked, even there. Return the Crawler and recall exposed squads before logging off if you do not want that exposure.
What should I spend premium currency on first?
This guide does not recommend a purchase. Complete the free opening objectives, free daily summon, and Daily Free Drop before evaluating optional offers.
What comes after the first-day route?
Continue facility progression, refine multiple squad compositions, learn Wastes extraction and haul protection, contribute to your alliance, and prepare for larger objectives around the Citadel.
Start your first day
Bring your Crawler online, finish the Awakening, and turn the starter kit into a squad you understand.
