Crawler Base Building Strategy: Position and Upgrade Your Mobile Fortress

By Ashen Throne Editorial · Updated 2026-10-02

The best next Crawler upgrade in Ashen Throne is the one that removes the constraint on your next operation. If a recipe is locked, check the Workshop. If research is capped, check the Garage. If a training batch will not fit, check Barracks queue capacity. Moving faster is a separate question: raising Barracks level does not directly increase Crawler speed.

Your mobile fortress needs both a development plan and a place to operate. An upgraded facility cannot fix a bad route home, and a good parking spot cannot unlock research you have not prepared for.

If you have just finished the tutorial, follow the first-24-hours guide for the opening objective sequence. This guide is for choosing what to develop next and when to move.

Understand the Barracks catch-up rule

Ashen Throne's facilities do not level independently without limits. The Barracks controls the ceiling for the other facilities, but the rest of the Crawler must catch up before you raise that ceiling again.

The rules are:

Queued upgrades are not completed prerequisites. If the next step is blocked, inspect what still needs to finish before spending catalysts on a different timer.

This gives you room to prioritize within a tier, but not to ignore the other facilities forever. Upgrade the system that helps your current operation first, then budget for the remaining catch-up work before the next Barracks level.

Example: plan backward from Garage Level 3

Suppose your Barracks and Garage are Level 2, and you want to take a research to Level 3. Upgrading the Garage is only part of the route.

  1. Check every facility. Any system still below Level 2 must reach Level 2 before Barracks can advance.
  2. Complete Barracks Level 3. That raises the facility ceiling. Starting its timer is not enough.
  3. Complete Garage Level 3. This opens the required research ceiling.
  4. Start the research itself. The Garage upgrade does not grant research levels automatically. You still need the research resources and a free research slot.

Only one research can be active at a time. If another research is already running, include its completion in the plan.

The point is not that everyone should rush Garage Level 3. It is that a useful upgrade plan starts with the desired capability and works backward through its actual prerequisites.

Match the facility to the problem

What is holding you back? Where to look What to check before upgrading
The next facility level is locked Barracks Current facility ceiling and unfinished catch-up levels
A training batch will not fit Barracks Queue capacity, queued troops and the batch's tier weight
You need to craft Signal Conduits Workshop Level 2 unlock and the recipe's resources
A research level is locked Garage Required Garage level and whether another research is active
Passive Fuel is the shortage Generator Production rate and how close storage is to its cap
Passive Scrap is the shortage Scrap Yard Production rate, storage headroom and upcoming costs
Passive Rations are the shortage Grow Plot Production versus the army's consumption
Passive $ato is the shortage Datacenter Production, storage and the next expense

Production and storage work together. Once a resource reaches its passive-production cap, that production stops adding more until there is room again. A higher rate is less useful if you repeatedly leave the resource capped.

Do not confuse that cap with a rule that every reward above it is destroyed. The resource system can retain above-cap balances; the cap governs passive accumulation. Check what you actually have and what the next upgrade consumes.

Training capacity is not the size of your entire army

The Barracks base training queue grows by 200 capacity units per completed level. Without capacity modifiers, Level 2 gives 400 units of queue space and Level 3 gives 600.

That is not always the same as the number of soldiers:

Troop tier Queue capacity used per soldier
T1 1
T2 10
T3 100

For example, an empty, unmodified Level 2 queue can fit 400 T1 soldiers or 40 T2 soldiers, assuming you have unlocked the troop and can afford it. Existing queued batches consume part of that space. Troops you already own do not.

Buffs and Crawler-frame bonuses can change the effective queue, so use the capacity displayed for your current batch. Commander Leadership is a separate limit on what you can bring in a squad. A larger training queue does not automatically create more commander capacity.

When training is blocked, identify which limit you are actually hitting before starting an upgrade.

Improve movement with Drive Overhaul

The current Crawler movement formula is flat across Barracks levels. Upgrading Barracks alone does not make the base drive faster.

For movement research, look for Drive Overhaul in the Garage's research interface. It improves Crawler and squad movement. Raising the Garage opens research levels; completing the research supplies the benefit.

Ordinary Crawler movement does not charge Fuel for distance traveled. Plan the route around travel time and exposure rather than a per-tile driving cost.

A faster Crawler is useful for travel, not a guarantee that you can escape every attack. Destination, distance and the time at which you enter safety still matter.

Choose a position for the operation you intend to run

Before moving, decide whether you are positioning for extraction, an alliance objective or a return to safety. Then check both the destination and the path.

For extraction, being nearer a suitable site can shorten the squad's journey. But the closest site is not necessarily the right resource, tier or defender matchup. Moving the Crawler should support a target you have assessed, not commit you to whatever happens to be nearby.

Check your current extraction radius before planning around a site. A visible site can still be out of range; move closer or review Extraction Scooter Range research in the Garage. For ordinary post-tutorial extraction, you also cannot launch to a Wastes site while your Crawler is in the Frontier, even if the target is within range.

For alliance activity, coordinate the target and timing before relocating. Allow time to arrive before launching a raid: raids cannot start while the Crawler is moving. A position that is convenient for one solo run may be inconvenient for the next shared objective.

For safety, the distinction is exact: the Frontier protects your Crawler from player attacks, but not troops occupying extraction sites. Those sites remain contestable even in the Frontier. The Wastes and Deep Wastes expose the Crawler itself.

Protection and banking follow the Crawler's live crossing into the Frontier, not the final arrival at a distant destination. Existing unbanked haul banks at that crossing. Active extraction squads outside the Frontier are recalled as you enter, so returning to safety also changes what work remains active.

A short check before your next move

Your upgrade plan and movement plan should answer the same objective. Finish the prerequisite that unlocks a useful capability, prepare the squad to use it, then put the Crawler where that operation makes sense.

Read the Ashen Throne mechanics guide for how those choices connect to extraction and alliance warfare.
