Whatever it was before The Hollow got to it, that's gone now. What remains is the Signal, amplified and warped into something that shouldn't be alive. It coordinates the hordes the way a brain coordinates a body. Cut it off and the hordes scatter. Nobody's managed to cut it off yet.
